The Volunteers game against Houston in 1998 may have been a blowout, however at one time, no one really knew what to expect. Tennessee had just come off of its 2nd win of the year against the Florida Gators, a team they hadn’t beaten in the previous 5 tries, and a 1 point win over the Syracuse Orangemen. Many were wondering if the Vols were due a letdown game and the possibility that there maybe even an upset. Coming into the game the Houston Cougars boasted the nation’s 4th best run defense giving up just 42 yards per game; however the Vols would use their stable of running backs to make the Cougars look silly. Tennessee would rack up 334 yards on the ground including a Jamal Lewis 59 yard run and a Shawn Bryson 62 yard run. The running game wasn’t the only shining light as Tee Martin went 14 for 19 with 234 yards passing in the Volunteer win. In the end, the Cougars were no real threat to the powerhouse Volunteers as they were only able to muster 239 total yards, compared to Tennessee’s 589.
