Its pretty hard to believe, but the last time that the Tennessee Vols walked out of the Georgia Dome with a win was December 5th 1998. Favored by 15 ½ points, the Volunteers were the overwhelming favorite, and the general consensus was that Mississippi State was lucky just to be there. The game stayed close for its entirety. An overpowered Bulldog offense was kept at bat most of the night by the vaunted Tennessee defense. Mississippi State would strike fear into Vol nation as they took the lead late in the 4th with an 83 yard punt return. Despite being down, the Vols came back like they had all season long. The Mississippi State score seemed to have lit a fire under the Volunteers as quarterback Tee Martin led Tennessee to 2 scores in the span of 32 seconds, 1 pass to Peerless Price and another to Cedric Wilson with less than 6 minutes left to play. The 2 quick scores by the Vols would be the back breaker for the Bulldogs. The game would end with a score of 24-14 and Tennessee on their way to the Fiesta Bowl.
