The Tennessee Volunteer 1998 defense maybe one of the most dominant in the modern era. Under the leadership of Coordinator John Chavis and guys like Al Wilson, Dwayne Goodrich, Deon Grant, Billy Ratliff, Raynoch Thompson, Fred White, and others, this roster read as a who’s who of Tennessee defense. There were multiple records set by multiple people on that defense, records that are still intact today. There were 4 different occasions that year where the Vols defense held their opponents to single digits, including 1 shut out.  The defense was by far the foundation of the team, helping out the offense on several occasions, most notably recovering the fumble in the famous “stumble and fumble” incident against Arkansas.
